My Favorite Travel Apps for Outdoor Adventures and Global Explorations
Traveling is one of my favorite ways to recharge, explore, and learn about the world. Over the years, I’ve discovered several travel apps that make outdoor adventures and international trips much more seamless and enjoyable. Here’s my go-to list of apps that I rely on to navigate, hike, and make the most of my journeys.
For Outdoor Adventures
When it comes to hiking and outdoor activities, preparation is key. These apps are indispensable for exploring nature safely and effectively:
- AllTrails: This app is a must for hikers of all levels. With detailed trail maps, user reviews, and difficulty ratings, it helps me find the best trails wherever I’m traveling. I also appreciate the offline maps feature, which is perfect for when I’m deep in the wilderness.
- Garmin: I always bring my reliable Garmin compact satellite device on my outdoor adventures to stay connected, even in areas with no cell service. Not only does it provide peace of mind, but it’s also a lifesaver in emergencies, allowing me to send an SOS message if needed. I put it to the test during my trip to North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, when cell service was down, and was able to send texts and keep in touch loved ones.

For Navigation
Getting lost is never fun, especially in a new city. That’s why I always use these apps to ensure I’m on the right path:
- Google Maps: Before any trip, I download offline maps of the cities I’ll be visiting. This feature has saved me countless times in areas without cell signal or Wi-Fi. Whether I need walking directions, public transit routes, or just a sense of where I am, Google Maps is my navigation lifeline.
- iExit: This app is a lifesaver for road trips. It shows what amenities are available at upcoming highway exits, so you can plan stops for gas, food, or rest breaks.
For International Travel
Traveling outside the U.S. can be both exciting and challenging, especially when it comes to language and currency differences. These apps make international travel much easier:
- Currency Plus: Converting currencies on the go is hassle-free with this app. It’s straightforward, accurate, and essential for staying on budget.
- Google Translate: This app is a game-changer for breaking language barriers. While in Portugal, I discovered the voice-to-voice translation feature—you simply speak into the app, and it translates your words into the local language, complete with audio playback. It’s perfect for having conversations with locals and makes traveling in a foreign country so much smoother.
For Luggage Storage
Sometimes you’ll find yourself with extra time to explore a city after checking out of your hotel but before heading to your next destination. That’s where this app comes in:
- Bounce: This app is a lifesaver when I need a convenient place to store my luggage. It shows nearby storage locations where I can securely stash my bags for a few hours or the day. It’s affordable and gives me the freedom to wander around luggage-free.
For Airport Lounges
Layovers and long waits at the airport don’t have to be uncomfortable, thanks to these apps:
- Priority Pass: As a Priority Pass member, I use the app to locate airport lounges on the fly. It’s incredibly convenient for finding lounges by terminal and gate, making it easy to relax, recharge, and enjoy some snacks before my next flight.
- Lounge Review: Shows all the lounges in an airport and how to access them.
For Finding Accommodations
When it comes to booking places to stay, these apps are my go-to tools:
- Hotels.com, Booking.com, Airbnb, HotelTonight: These apps help me find and book accommodations, whether in advance or last-minute. HotelTonight is especially handy for same-day bookings.
- BringFido: If I’m traveling with a furry friend, BringFido makes it easy to find pet-friendly accommodations.
- Hilton Honors: I love using this app because it allows me to choose my room ahead of time. It’s incredibly convenient and adds a personal touch to my stay.
- World of Hyatt: In some locations, the Hyatt app offers Hyatt Mobile Entry, which provides keyless access to your room. It’s a small but very useful feature.
For Cost Sharing
Traveling with friends or family often means splitting costs. This app simplifies the process:
- Splitwise: This app is perfect for tracking shared expenses. You can upload receipts, divide bills, and input who paid for what. At the end of the trip, it tallies everything and shows who owes who what.
For Guided Tours
Of course I always do my own Google searches and utilize Google Drive folders when trip planning, but apps certainly help to simplify the process!
- Rick Steves’ Audio Europe: This app offers incredible audio guides, including city walking tours and museum tours. It’s like having a personal tour guide in your pocket.
- CultureTrip: This app provides curated recommendations for attractions, restaurants, and activities at my destination.
For Packing
I have several different packing lists that I’ve created at-the-ready for various types of trips (outdoors, with my dog, resort, international, etc.)
- PackPoint: PackPoint helps me organize my packing list based on the destination, trip length, and planned activities. It’s great for ensuring I don’t forget any essentials.
For Rental Cars
Getting a rental car doesn’t have to be a headache with this app:
- Turo: This peer-to-peer car-sharing app often provides cheaper and more convenient options than traditional rental car agencies. I’ve used it multiple times to pick up cars directly from airport parking lots. Just remember to ensure you have the appropriate insurance, which you can purchase through Turo if needed.
Final Thoughts
These travel apps have become essential tools for me, whether I’m hiking a remote trail, navigating an unfamiliar city, or traveling internationally. Let me know what your favorite travel apps are that I might be missing!
